STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN U.S. CHICKEN AND TURKEY SLAUGHTER AgEcon
Ollinger, Michael; MacDonald, James M.; Madison, Milton E..
Cost function analyses using data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census reveal substantial scale economies in chicken and turkey slaughter. These economies show no evidence of diminishing as plant size increases, are much greater than those realized in cattle and hog slaughter, and have resulted in a huge increase in plant size over the 1972-92 period. The findings also suggest that consolidation in the chicken and turkey slaughter industry is likely to continue, particularly if the growth in the demand for poultry diminishes.
Tipo: Report Palavras-chave: Chicken slaughter; Turkey slaughter; Production costs; Structural change; Livestock Production/Industries.

The Growth and Direction of the Biodiesel Industry in the United States AgEcon
Paulson, Nicholas D.; Ginder, Roger G..
The biodiesel industry in the United States has realized significant growth over the past decade through large increases in annual production and production capacity and a transition from smaller batch plants to larger-scale continuous producers. The larger, continuous-flow plants provide operating cost advantages over the smaller batch plants through their ability to capture co-products and reuse certain components in the production process. This paper uses a simple capital budgeting model developed by the authors along with production data supplied by industry sources to estimate production costs, return-on-investment levels, and break-even conditions for two common plant sizes (30 and 60 million gallon annual capacities) over a range of biodiesel and...

The persistence of small dairy farms in Austria from an economic perspective AgEcon
Kirner, Leopold; Hambrusch, Josef; Ortner, Karl M..
In the international comparison the structure of milk production in Austria is small scale. The present study presents two theoretical approaches to explain the persistence of small dairy farms in Austria: the opportunity cost principle and the theory of the agricultural household. With regard to the first one it is debatable whether the flat rates really can represent the costs of own production factors in their alternative uses in small enterprises. An illustration on the basis of production cost accounts shows that small dairy farms with no possibilities for the utilization of their own production factors (especially for labour) can cover the production costs by revenues only. Secondly it is argued that agricultural production is likely to continue in...

The Seed Industry for Dryland Crops in Eastern Kenya AgEcon
Muhammad, Lutta; Njoroge, Kiarie; Bett, Charles; Mwangi, Wilfred; Verkuijl, Hugo; De Groote, Hugo.
The development and promotion of improved crop varieties as well as efficient seed production, distribution, and marketing systems have contributed significantly to increased agricultural production and food security in Kenya. However, these impacts have not been replicated in the semi-arid midlands due to climatic, soil, and institutional factors. Following the liberalization of agriculture in the late 1980s, there has been greater participation of the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and voluntary agencies in the area. This study examined the extent to which these developments affected farmers’ access to dryland crops. The study found that the low quantity of seed traded, high cost of production, and high seed supply prices constrained the...

The Structure and Profitability of Organic Field Crop Production: The Case of Wheat AgEcon
McBride, William D.; Greene, Catherine R.; Ali, Mir B.; Foreman, Linda F..
Results from long-term experimental trials suggest that similar yields and lower costs are possible from organic compared with conventional field crop production, but there is little information about the relative costs and returns on commercial farms. This study examines the structure and profitability of commercial wheat production using a nationwide survey of wheat producers for 2009 that includes a targeted sample of organic growers. Treatment-effect models were specified to isolate the impact of choosing the organic approach on various levels of wheat production costs. Average organic wheat yields were much lower than for conventional wheat, but per acre operating plus capital costs were also lower. Estimated operating costs per bushel for organic...

Valuing water in irrigated agriculture and reservoir fisheries: A multiple-use irrigation system in Sri Lanka AgEcon
Renwick, Mary E..
Although irrigation projects often provide water for more than crop irrigation, water allocation and management decisions often do not account for nonirrigation uses of water. Failure to account for the multiple uses of irrigation water may result in inefficient and inequitable water allocation decisions. Decision-makers often lack information on the relative economic contributions of water in irrigation and nonirrigation uses. This report addresses this problem. It examines the relative economic contributions of irrigated agriculture and reservoir fisheries in the Kirindi Oya irrigation system, located in southeastern Sri Lanka. The results of the analysis indicate the importance of both irrigated paddy production and reservoir fisheries to the local...

Thai Agricultural
Somrote Prakobboon; Wannaphan Janlapa.
Low production efficiency and high production costs are the weakness in the SWOT analysis of rice production Thailand. Participatory cost analysis and searching for cost reduction of rice production might strengthen the rice farmers. During 2011 - 2013, we conducted community based pilot trails in the village 5 and 7, Thachang Subdistrict, Muang District, Nakhonnayok Province. After community meeting to identify local rice production problems and selected the pilot field, the field was prepared and planted with pre-germinated seed broadcasting at the rate of 20 kg/ha. Insect and pest were observed daily. At 15 days after planting, 30 kg/ha organic fertilizer and 25 kg/ha chemical fertilizer was applied to the field. Comparing production cost and yield to...
